TraitBuddy  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 9.1.0
by: Weolo [More]
TraitBuddy is an addon that tries to help you easily manage and keep track of what crafting research traits all your characters know. Great for those alt'o'holics out there just like myself.

I have expanded many game tooltips so that the information you want to see is right there on the item where you need it. There is also a custom screen if you prefer to see all the research in one place.

In case you are unsure what an alt is, it is a term to describe another/alternative character.

This addon is for Blacksmithing, Clothing, Woodworker and Jewellery traits as the other professions don't have traits you can research.

The latest version of addon library LibAddonMenu is required and will need to be installed separately.

Features
  • Expanded in-game tooltips:
Bag, loot, mail, buyback, trade, guild store search, guild store listings, links placed in chat, quest rewards, crafting, equipped items, and motifs
  • See the traits your character and your alts know
  • See the traits your character and your alts are researching
  • Automatically knows when your research has finished. You don't need to log on to your alts for it to update.
  • See the motifs your character and your alts know
  • Research overview screen
  • Compact movable window
  • Allows you to view any of your alts by simply picking them from a dropdown or using an icon bar
  • The screen you see will be just as if you had logged on to that alt
  • You choose which alts are included/compared
  • Customisable icon and text colours
  • Translated into English, French, German, Japanese and Russian
  • Supports gamepad mode
  • Ability to filter motifs, unknown, almost completed etc
  • List of all crafted sets with details of their bonuses and locations
  • Support for other addons such as Inventory Grid View and Inventory Insight
  • Icons in inventory
  • Plus a lot more...
Check out the attached screenshots for a small sample of what the addon offers.

What do the icons mean?
Green Tick
The selected character has researched that trait.

Orange Tick
At least one or more of your characters has completed researching that trait.
But not the currently selected character.

Blue Hourglass
The selected character is researching that trait.

Orange Hourglass
No characters have completed researching that trait but one or more of your characters have started to learn it.

The colours can be customised from the options.

How to set it up
  • Log in to each character one by one so TraitBuddy can automatically work its magic
  • Check out the tooltips on items with traits and motifs
There are 3 ways to open the TraitBuddy window
  1. Bind a key
  2. Use the buttons added to the corners of the crafting stations, skill screen and guild store
  3. Use the chat commands /traitbuddy and /traitbuddyoptions
Use any combination you prefer.
Binding a key is done from the normal ESO options screen
  • Bring up the ESO Options > Controls > Keybindings and scroll down until you see "TraitBuddy Addon"
  • Choose a key you would like to use to show and hide the window
  • Personally I bind the ] key

Info for other Addon makers
Detect when mousing over a trait in TraitBuddy
In your onLoad function
Lua Code:
  1. CALLBACK_MANAGER:RegisterCallback("TB-OnTraitMouseUp", OnTraitMouseUp)
Then add a new function to do your custom stuff
Lua Code:
  1. local function OnTraitMouseUp(craftingSkillType, researchLineIndex, traitIndex)
  2.     d(zo_strformat("DEBUG: OnTraitMouseUp <<1>> <<2>> <<3>>", tostring(craftingSkillType), tostring(researchLineIndex), tostring(traitIndex)))
  3. end

If you have ideas to improve this addon or have found a bug please either post on the comments section of this addon page or send me a private message.

I hope you like it and find it useful.
See you in game @Weolo on EU Server

If you let me know the addons which causes the overlapping I will look at putting in a permanent fix in those situations. I would use conditional statements to check if that addon was being used.

Hi tungstic

Yes absolutely if you check the "How to set it up" section of the "Addon Info" tab it describes different ways you can get to the main TraitBuddy screen. Look for "ways to open the TraitBuddy window" bit.

Essentially it is bind a key, buttons from crafting stations and chat commands.

I have not yet managed to get the crafting station button working for Gamepads but I am trying to. And now with Morrowind expansion it gives autocomplete prompts when trying chat commands.

Version 5.0

I just uploaded version 5.0 it will be available to download shortly.

Along with a few tweaks and improvements this version adds the motifs for Morrowind.
  • Morag Tong
  • Buoyant Armiger
  • Ashlander
  • Militant Ordinator
You can download this version anytime and the Morrowind changes will kick in automatically once the servers are patched today.
In case anyone was wondering it is fine to download this version even if you did not pre-order Morrowind.

I'm off to work, see you in Morrowind later when the world become full of Wardens

D: It's because for example, when I have 50 things in my deconstruct list, I wouldn't want to check each tooltip individually to find out which ones I already have trait copies of, or when checking guild store for deals, I use AGS to find weapons/armor with unknown traits on them, but the majority of them are traits I already own sitting in bank, so its handy to have the "you don't have a copy of this item's trait!" as an icon instead of tooltip for that as well. But I may just be a bit of a packrat, and most people wouldn't have this problem..

But I think RA only compares traits for the current character from bank/that character's inventory only. And I could definitely see that converting the same idea to be able to track multiple characters, as your mod does, as well as alt's inventories, etc, would really make it alot more complicated!

tldr; I still prefer RA for icons, but that's ok, your addon is still awesome! And I'm sure your icons are awesome for ppl who are less packratty than me!
No promises but I will look in to seeing if there is something I can do

1. Color coded icons for multiple items of the same trait (Because I always end up with multiples, and before I used RA I'd always end up with a gabilion copies of the same trait/items sitting in bank waiting to get researched...)
2. Show icons at guild store and crafting station (Icons at guild store so I can quickly scroll through weapons/armor and see at a glance which have traits I want to research without having to mouseover each one, and icons at craft stations so I can quickly see which I need to save vs which are copies/traitless/known so I can safely decon)

Any chance of those features being added to your mod eventually, or too complicated?
Hi Kenza, thanks for your feedback.

Let me start with your 2nd feature as that is the easiest to talk about.
Yep, no problem what so ever for me to add the icon support to more inventories. I will do some research and testing to see what I can achieve.

Now to your first feature.
This is easier to say but more complicated to work the logic out.
For example let's say you have 3 characters marked as blacksmiths and you find 3 chest pieces with the training trait on. If none of those characters currently know training chests then all 3 items would show the icon in your bag. Green by default if its for the current character and yellow otherwise.

But lets say one of those characters already knows training chests, that would mean 2 of the items would show the icon and the last item would show no icon. The 2 items showing the icon would again either be green or yellow. So for this to work I have to build logic to determine which items should be marked with the icons. Most likely based on gold value and then level and champion points level.

Lets try that with a slightly different scenario, 3 training chests, 3 characters marked as blacksmiths, 1 character knows training chests, 1 training chest is already stored in your bank or sitting on an alt. Again its a similar situation where I have to have logic in place to realise that you already have items sitting waiting to be researched and showing the icons correctly.

Sorry to hit you with all that but I just wanted to point out it's tricky and at the moment TraitBuddy contains none of that logic and does not currently store which items are being kept in the bank, your bag or on alts.

What might help is if you download the InventoryInsight addon, then enable that feature in the TraitBuddy options and see if that's good enough for now. Hopefully that provides you with the information you need.
Give it a go and please give me your 200% honest feadback afterwards on if its good enough.

What you are talking about is a trait tracking system which would have to collect data from your characters bags, gear they were wearing, what is stored in the bank, possibly what is in guild bank, and do that for every alt you have.
I will take another look at the other features Research Assistant had but I won't promise anything yet.

What I can do is tell you that I have already added support for another current addon called Inventory Insight.
That addon does item tracking so I extended my own tooltip with information about items which had traits on them.
This is an example of the extra bit which would appear under the current TraitBuddy tooltip if you were also using Inventory Insight and had enabled this feature in the TraitBuddy options.

I was hoping that would be enough rather than me building a full trait tracking system.
I only just added my first ever bit of code to interact with the inventory with my last release

A slight side effect of doing this is that I have to go through all the items stored in Inventory Insight to check if the item has a trait on it so there can be slight stuttering from the inventory on PCs (not using gamepad) when quickly looking at multiple items.

Please try the combination out and give me your honest opinion, is this good enough? can you live with the stuttering? etc.
Once I know that I can make the final decision if I am going to build a full trait tracking system within TraitBuddy.
I will try this out when I get a chance and see how well it works. In any case building a full trait tracking system sounds a bit involved to solve a fairly minor issue for me. Personally once I get all my alts to 8 traits (prob next 2-3 months) I won't need the system anyway. Your last update (where you added the visual in the inventory screen) finally let me remove research assistant altogether as that feature makes it MUCH quicker to scan down my bank that has nearly 200 items with traits waiting to be researched. Research Assistant has gotten buggy since 1T and wasn't tracking traits properly anymore (sometimes telling me an alt could research a trait that he already knew or telling me the alt already knew a trait he didn't. I've never found those errors in your add-on). I've looked at alot of add-ons dealing with traits. Yours is by far the best.
Ok, finally got a chance to try this out. I do see what you mean about stuttering but it's not too bad and I can certainly live with it. The summary you give in the tool tip solves the request I was looking for so this works very well for me.

Thanks

Okay I will play with it a bit more and see how it goes. In this screen shot I see what you mentioned.

Now in case others want a reference from someone other then you, I don't find it incredibly laggy. For me since I want the information from Trait Buddy, and since it adds the trait and style info I turned off the Style Info for Inventory Insight because it would be duplicated. It also opens up a frame when you look at your inventory or bank, so I turned all that off. Then I turned off all of the tool tip information because your mod is providing all the information needed. Then lastly, I only have that mod enabled for my main and the one alt that I store the gear on.

So with all that, I don't experience unacceptable lag, if any lag at all. I appreciate the suggestion.

Fiddle, I didn't look at the settings for you mod. Sorry about that.
