Version: 3.0.6
by: silvereyes [More]
PSA: silvereyes is no longer playing ESO, so this addon is looking for a new maintainer. Please reach out to Dolby via PM if you want to take ownership of this addon.

Automatically starts researching traits when at a craft station.

When paired with the Research Craft addon, you can to craft a bunch of research gear to store in your bags/bank, and then have your character automatically research the next item from the stockpile according to your configured priorities.

Dependencies

You must install the following libraries separately from this addon in order for it to work. I highly recommend using the Minion addon manager to simplify this process.

Use Cases
  • New players that want to store a bunch of research gear at once in the bank up front so they don't have to go find/buy/request new gear every few hours.
  • Storing a ton of research gear in your writ alts' bags so you don't have to manage their research manually.
  • Established crafters that haven't finished research, but tend to forget about it due to the long research times can store 10 or so research items in the bank so they don't have to worry about managing research for several months.

Configuration

The only gear used currently are the following:
  • No items locked with in-game lock
  • No items locked with FCO Item Saver (v1.0+ required)
  • Items marked for research with FCO Item Saver (v1.0+ required)
  • Quality less than or equal to the maximum configured quality. Default is blue quality (arcane).
  • Style is one of the configured allowed styles. By default, these include the racial styles plus Ancient Elf, Barbaric and Primal. You can either choose these in settings, or use the Auto Research right click menu to enable the checkbox for the style to allow it.
  • Non-set equipment, or sets that have been specifically selected. LibSets is required for selecting sets. Once enabled in settings, you can either choose a set manually in settings, or use the Auto Research right click menu to enable the checkbox for the set to allow it.
  • Only equip slots (e.g. Helm, Cuirass, etc.) that have been assigned a priority under the desired trait line (e.g. Blacksmithing) will be researched, in the priority configured. Equip slots set to (none) will not be researched.

Equipment pieces are selected for research based on fastest research times. For example, if you have all clothing pieces 8 trait researched *except* for medium armor helmets that have 7 traits, then medium armor helmets will be given preference over any other clothing pieces.

Trait research order is customizable under Settings > Addons > Auto Research, with 1 being the highest priority, and 9 being the lowest.

All else being equal, gear in the current player inventory is given preference over gear in the bank, lower quality items are preferred over higher quality ones, and lower level items are preferred over higher level items. You can also choose to select gear from just the current player inventory or just the player bank.

So this error should have been happening to anyone who tried to use AutoResearch without Lazy Writ Crafter, right? And yet only one person reported it... is he really the only person who's tried to use AutoResearch exclusive of LWC? Are scads of people just ignoring the errors and not reporting them? It's a good thing he reported it. I never saw the error because I've used both together since my first week of play in February.

Is that second parameter a general feature of LUA, or a specific feature of LibStub?

I should have looked at that line 350:What that means is that AutoResearch is CALLING the library LibStub to check for the presence of another active library LibLazyCrafting.

That call to LibStub seems to be behaving badly for you. Why? If the LLC library doesn't exist, as it didn't for you until you installed Lazy Writ Crafter, then the result should simply be false rather than true. Beyond that I'm stumped. I don't understand why it's throwing an error.
TL;DR: Change line 350 in AutoResearch.lua to local LLC = LibStub("LibLazyCrafting", true)

So Auto Research attempts to complete research prior to any crafting. It does this because of the auto-exit feature in the Writ Crafter. If the auto exit is on, and the Writ Crafter completes the crafting before anything is researched then Auto Research can't research anything. However, the Writ Crafter now uses LibLazyCrafting to actually do the crafting. So the Writ Crafter tells the library to craft something, which it does. So Auto Research now has to intercept LLC. To do that, it asks LibStub for the LLC table. LibStub doesn't find the LLC table, so it throws an error with the error function. However, adding true as a second parameter will tell LibStub to shut up.

local LLC = LibStub("LibLazyCrafting")
if LLC then
EVENT_MANAGER:UnregisterForEvent("LibLazyCrafting", EVENT_CRAFTING_STATION_INTERACT)

What that means is that AutoResearch is CALLING the library LibStub to check for the presence of another active library LibLazyCrafting.

Well, for your specific issue, you could solve that problem by installing FCO Item Saver and using per-character settings. It has the ability to lock an item per-character, and those locks are fully supported by AutoResearch already.

I may eventually add in the ability to toggle between account-wide and character-specific settings in this and my other addons, but using the above method will certainly solve the immediate problem faster for anyone that isn't subbed.

As for the more general gripe about inventory management in ESO, I feel your pain. I recently re-subbed because I was spending so much time on inventory management I wasn't enjoying the game. And I have all housing storage upgraded, all bags and banks upgraded and two guild banks! With jewelry crafting coming and all the dozens of new mat items, ZOS has pretty much made ESO plus necessary for anyone that doesn't like throwing away mats.

That's a good idea. I'll put it on the list.

I second these as being useful, just generally finer control of priority/precedence. Moar rules are better!

Also, per-character assignment of items for research would be very useful for this mod, if a means to make it practical could be found. I am usually always in favor of account-wide settings for mods, but I discovered the hard way that can work against me when the bank storage is used to store research gear for this mod, since it's shared across all characters. Some gear that I intended to be researched by my main character got unintentionally snapped up by my second character because it was stored in the bank. The only way I can see to prevent this now is to never let it draw from bank storage and only use character inventory. This is less an issue now that I've subscribed, with the bottomless craft bag taking the pressure off all other storage, but when I wasn't subscribed that was a huge problem because I was always constantly short of bag space and couldn't buy upgrades fast enough to outpace the need. I got around it at the time by spending $$$ to buy home chests and used those to store research gear (since AutoResearch couldn't/didn't look there). This is likely a challenge for anyone who isn't subscribing. Is there a way to implement something like that efficiently? I suspect it might wind up being a resource hog.

is it somehow possible to allow set items ?

from all the stuff i find while questing, most of it is green set stuff.

This should be fixed in the latest version 1.7.3. Please update and let me know if you run into any further issues.

First, thank you for such a time saving addon!

One thing I noticed, is that it doesn't seem to want to ignore a pair of locked nirnhoned rawhide guards in my bank. Alts have items in their inventory they can research, but it insists on attempting to research the locked guards. I get a message in the top right about not being able to research locked items, followed a second or two later with a message in red: 'Research Error'. No research will start though.

Taking the nirn guards out of the bank and putting on a different character, it then works correctly.

If I change settings to only use items from inventory, (with the nirn guards in bank) it will auto-research correctly.

As a side note, I do have locked nirn medium shoulders/boots/jack in the bank also, and it successfully ignores them with no problem.

Edit: Strike the last info, locked nirn rawhide shouler cops are now also blocking auto-researching on a different character.

I just had to come give you a big Thank You! for providing a fix for the No Available Research Slots issue. I had an open issue logged with ESO/ZOS since 3.1.5, and wasn't to thrilled when the problem wasn't resolved today in 3.1.6. I'm so glad I stumbled on your ESO forum post where you provided an explanation of the problem and a link to your fantastic addon that fixed my issues (on 4 crafters) right up!

Here is what I had proposed to ESO/ZOS last night, and I think I must have been on the right track...
Is there a way I can force a refresh of the games research window? Perhaps deleting a cached file? I half expect the problem might be "bad" cached data that the research window references, and that addons do not.
Here is what I had proposed to ESO/ZOS this morning as the cause of my issue...
I wonder if the issue has something to do with Prosperous being queued before the patch, and Invigorating being the replacement post patch? I'm starting to think that I have some characters with "double" research... they have the old "prosperous" still slotted somehow and may have the replacement "Invigorating" slotted, or another trait they moved on to (all dependent on timing)... but because Prosperous has been retired, the front-end research interface doesn't display it, nor does it have the ability to handle its existence... hence the behaviours I am seeing.
Thank you again for fixing what ESO/ZOS could not for over a week! And despite you having let them know about it multiple times since Morrowind!?!

This looked like such a "black box" problem, I am pleasantly amazed that you devised a solution... Its like watching a miracle unfold in-front of you. By fixing a problem that has been plaguing me for a week, I can't tell you how much appreciation I have for you and your fine work. Don't stop coding!

P.S. If you see a spike in installs for your addon, it might have something to the adverting I am about to give you
