Clean UI  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 1.3
by: Zinival [More]
Currently working on a tentative update and expansion...

This mod is free for anyone to alter/edit/update/patch/expand/etc. No need to ask permission, but PLEASE CREDIT ME in your mod description. My textures are inspired bu the console UI, but they are indeed custom textures. I made them before it was possible to extract the UI texture files from the game, so I had to tediously create them based on screenshots.

I specifically designed them to look less "flat" than the console textures, which included adding subtle color gradients and shadows. It may not look fancy, but it took a LOT of time to get everything looking right before it was possible to extract the UI texture files from the game. They are NOT default game assets, so please credit me if you base your textures on mine! Thanks.

Clean UI (for PC)

This addon retextures several elements of the UI to give a clean and consistent look, without straying far from the look of the default UI. If you've ever found yourself thinking that the default UI wouldn't be so bad without the "grunge" overlays and fuzzy textures, then this is the addon for you! Many of the changes are subtle, but I feel they are worthwhile. Take a look at the screenshots to see for yourself.

Please adjust your gamma in Video Settings for the best results!

Features
  • Various Small Improvements (removal of some "grunge" effects, etc)
  • Clean Action bar
  • Clean Ability and Achievement Icon Borders
  • Clean Progress Bars (XP, Champion, and Timer Bars)
  • Clean Tooltips
  • Clean Compass (compatible with addons that tweak the compass i.e resize/scale, move, hide, or hide the background)
  • Clean Player Attribute Bars (compatible with addons that add information/overlays/colors/opacity to the default frames, as well as custom unit frame addons)
  • Clean Unit Frames - Target/Group - (compatible with addons that add information/overlays/colors/opacity to the default frames, as well as custom unit frame addons)

Compatibility

Completely Compatible with nearly everything. Any addons that utilize default textures will be affected by this addon. (I think that's a good thing!)
Partially Compatible with other UI retexture addons, such as Oblivion Style UI and Skyrim Style UI. There seem to be some issues with our compasses coniflicting if you use a gamepad.
Completely Incompatible with ... nothing that I know of.

Recommended Addons
  • Azurah - Interface Enhanced - for various great improvements to the default UI
  • AUI - "TESO Template", for buff tracking and further customization of unit frames
  • MiniMap - because even though I spent a long time making the compass look nice, I still hate it

Thanks

Many, many thanks to Half-Dead for creating Oblivion Style UI and Skyrim Style UI. Without looking as those great UI addons I couldn't have figured out how to get my retextures into the game. Please check out them out if you are looking for a different UI.

Permission

Consider every texture in this addon a modder's resource. Everyone is allowed to use/modify/fix my textures however they like and upload them as part of their own addon. All I ask is that you don't put them on sites that charge money and that you GIVE ME CREDIT in your mod description or readme. Thanks!

Request: Options for borders and no compass background.

Hello. I am trying out Clean UI with parts of LUI and AUI. It looks great! A couple of things that would be nice is if there were some options for the borders. I use a large screen and the bright, thick borders around the compass, skills, etc stand out more to me now than the default smudgy background. It would be nice if thinner lined borders or even no borders were options. Also, if a darker color border could be used.

If no compass background could be an option that would also be really nice. Thank you!

Thanks for the feedback. I forgot to take larger screens into consideration. I'm still figuring out LUA, so it might take me a while to figure out how to offer options, but for now I can work on thin/no/dark border options. it will probably take some time. Could you tell me which parts do look good on a larger screen? I don't know how to test that with my monitor (1920x1200). I'm guessing just general things like grunge removal, etc.?

In the meantime, please consider adjusting your gamma (brightness) settings in the Video Settings menu. With proper gamma settings the borders should not be quite so bright.

You're welcome!

Versions 1.1 of Clean UI is now fully compatible with addons that tweak the compass (i.e. resize/scale, move, hide, change opacity). I recommend Wykkyd Full Immersion "Compass Tweaks" to hide the compass background.

Truly? A UI that's neither bloated nor feels out of place whilst improving visibility? Awesome. I use AUI for the extended action bar and Srendarr for buff tracking, but could never acquire a taste for the popular unit mods (and neither for the default ones, at that). Thank you for this!

So far, the only thing that doesn't quite work for me is the compass. It feels even more intrusive for some reason, perhaps it's because of the bright border or the new overall form. (Resizing it doesn't help.) Also, icons at the far right or left seem to be floating just outside of it, but maybe that's an issue with my setup. I'd prefer a solution akin to the console one -- the compass there looks simpler, yet more elegant. Perhaps I'm alone in this, though.

Edit: The compass should be fixed now. Please download the latest version of CLEAN UI for the fixes. If you have any other issues please tell me!

I also adjusted the overall look of the compass in v1.1. It's now slightly smaller and has a less prominent border. It's now also fully compatible with addons that tweak the default compass.

If you'd like to adjust the size/scale of the compass further, please check out Wykkyd Full Immersion "Compass Tweaks" for adjusting the compass to your tastes, or even to hide the compass background completely.

Thanks for the quick update!

The borders are much more subtle now, and I can confirm your UI now works with mods that resize the compass. I've actually been using CompassMaintenance for this, although it wasn't active while testing your mod previously. It's most likely abandoned and outdated, but it sounds like Wykkyd Full Immersion may be somewhat prone to malfunctioning as well. (Recent comments seem to imply this, at least.)

For curiosity's sake: I haven't had a chance to see for myself, but your list of features doesn't mention group and raid frames. Do you have plans for those as well?

Is this console UI or something similar to console UI? I couldn't really tell, I really like how console skill bars and attribute bars look but don't really like other things that comes with it.

The default group and raid frames use the same textures as player/target frames, so they are retextured by Clean UI. In addition, any Unit Frame addons which have the option to use the default frames, such as AUI (TESO Template), will also be affected by Clean UI.

I wasn't aware people were having problems with Full Immersion, so thanks for letting me know. (I actually don't use the compass myself, I prefer MiniMap with the Astro Wheel border. It's so pretty!)

This is NOT a console UI, though the cleaner skill bar and attribute bars were indeed inspired by the look of the console UI. I just wanted to make the PC UI look a little better without any drastic changes. The screenshots show pretty much everything this addon does.

Thank you

Thank you for the response and work. I was thinking this add on could also be a good add on for re-skin plugins where artists could add in UI elements for different border colors or textures. For example, celtic scroll work borders, colored borders, etc.

I've always been a little disappointed that ESO add ons were never just re-skins. They have always seemed like they targeted one part of the UI or enhanced the information provided by the UI.

Again, thank you for your work!

The reason that there aren't many reskins is because there is currently no way to extract most of the UI textures from the game. You can extract almost everything else with EsoExtractData, but there's a bug which makes it impossible to extract most UI textures.

Half-Dead retextured quite a bit of the UI for Skyrim Style UI and Oblivion Style UI. Looking at those files saved me a ton of time, but there were still a lot of things that no one had retextured yet.

For those things, I could only view the textures and dimensions in TextureIt. I had to actually make the textures from scratch using dimensions and screenshots as reference. I spent hours and hours getting everything to line up correctly.

That's why I plan to release all my source files once I have them organized. When people have the proper dimensions and alignment to go off of, retexturing the UI becomes much, much simpler. It will simply be a matter of "tracing" over my textures with their own, so to speak.

I use Skyrim Style UI and a lot of the textures are redirects from the Gamepad UI. At least the icons in the main menu are.
By the way I love this addon it is pretty much what I have been looking for in a UI. However there is a bug in the latest version. Whenever I reload the UI, or switch to gamepad UI, the compass disappears. I have to exit the game to get it back.

Edit.. btw I forgot to mention I had disabled the compass in Skyrim Style UI.

Blue border example

Hello. Here is a quick example of what I was thinking. I'm not very Photoshop savvy but I took all of your art assets and ran them through a batch process. I am sure anyone with a little skill could come up with many more options.

I can't recreate the issue on my end. Maybe it's a conflict with Skyrim UI?

Yeah that's pretty neat! I'd love to see people make some more variety. All of my textures are free for anyone to use as long as it's only used for ESO, and not uploaded to a pay site.

Clean character window and inventory background?

I still have the mottled smokey backgrounds for the character and inventory backgrounds. I am not sure if this is from another addon or not currently a part of Clean UI. Is this possible to add? Thanks again!
