Version: 1.4.1
by: code65536 [More]

Yet another recipe/motif tracker? Why use Character Knowledge?

Character Knowledge was created in response to some of the frustrations that I have with existing addons. Specifically...
  1. Character Knowledge is altaholic-friendly. It can track knowledge of characters across multiple accounts and even across servers.
  2. Character Knowledge has a concept of character priority. Most people have a "main" character that they prioritize for learning recipes and motifs, and Character Knowledge recognizes this and helps ensure that more important characters are given priority for distributing those extra copies of recipes and motifs that you found.
  3. Character Knowledge makes it easier to access information with a simple, straightforward UI.
  4. Character Knowledge gives players the option to share their information with friends via an export/import feature. No more need for manually compiling a list of missing motifs during the Anniversary Event.

What does this addon do, specifically?

Character Knowledge browser:
The main UI lets users browse through a master list of motifs, recipes, and furnishing plans, along with an overview of the extent of your characters' knowledge of these items.

Information added to tooltips throughout the game:
Whenever you look at an item tooltip for a recipe, plan, or motif, you'll see an overview of which characters know that particular item. In the case of chaptered motifs, you will also see an overview of your knowledge of all the chapters of this style.

Advanced Filters custom filter plugin:
For users of the Advanced Filters addon, Character Knowledge will also install a few custom filter plugins for Advanced Filters.

LibCharacterKnowledge

Character Knowledge includes the LibCharacterKnowledge library. Addon authors who wish to use the library for their own addons can check out the the LibCharacterKnowledge Developer Reference. LibCharacterKnowledge is also available as a standalone download for users who want to use it without installing Character Knowledge.

      • New motifs that lack a full book item for use in the browser listing (e.g., Ancestral Akaviri)
      • The inability to sort by the name of the motif (the motif number was not in a separate column, so sorting was possible only on the motif number and not the name of the style)

    • Browser: Fixed an issue causing the "-" special search term to exclude partially-completed motif styles

  • Version 1.1.0 (2021/02/25)
    • Browser: Since special provisioning recipes are level-agnostic, the level information for these recipes have been replaced with sourcing information
    • Browser: For recipes and furnishing plans, it is now possible to link the resulting crafted items in chat, via the right-click context menu

There is not. That's because LibCharacterKnowledge acquires data about a character's motif knowledge by checking whether or know a specific motif chapter or book is known by the character. It does not look at achievement progress (which is an alternative approach used by some other addons). Because LCK doesn't use achievements, it also doesn't have any code to tie motifs to achievements.

First, the problem is with hard-linking a library's files in an addon's manifest. That was something that had to be done before ESO properly supported addon libraries. CK doesn't do this, as LCK (and LEJ) have their own manifests, and version resolution happens as intended by the game's addon manager.

Second, LCK is not really separate. It's an integral part of CK; there is no other way to get LCK and it's not bundled with any other addon. It's packaged internally as a library so that other addons that want to use its features have a structured way to access them.

Third, I don't like users having to download separate dependencies. It's annoying, and I avoid external dependencies as much as possible as a rule.

Fourth, you should be more concerned about LEJ than LCK, since there are multiple addons that use and include LEJ. That said, it's not a problem (aside from some extra kilobytes of disk space consumed), since it has its own manifest, so the addon manager is able to properly handle the multiple copies of LEJ.

You might wanna try Master Recipe List. It's a diff use case, and that add-on does this particular part (and a few others, like bookmarking recipes for crafting, or marking ingredients you need for specific selected recipes).

One dot seems to indicate the recipe is unknown by the character with a lower priority and both 2 and 3 dots seem to show a character with higher priority, but what is the difference? (And am I right for +/1?)
There's a lot of documentation that I need to write but haven't found the time for.
  • Plus sign: The current character is the one that should learn the item.
    • Specifically, the highest-ranked character who does not know the item is the current character.
  • Pips: The item should be learned by a different character, not the current character, with the number of pips denoting the relation of that character with your current character.
    • 3 pips: The highest-ranked character who does not know the item is the first character on your priority list (i.e., your main) and is not the current character. It may or may not be known by the current character.
    • 2 pips: The highest-ranked character who does not know the item is ranked higher than the current character. It may or may not be known by the current character.
    • 1 pip: The highest-ranked character who does not know the item is ranked lower than the current character. It is known by the current character.
Wow, yeah, that was hard to decipher
I thought it would be straightforward. Maybe I was a bit too verbose...

Simple version:
  • Plus sign: Use it yourself.
  • Pips: Give it to someone else to use.

Slightly less simple version:
  • 3 Pips: Give it to your main
  • 2 Pips: Give it to someone more important.
  • Plus sign: Use it yourself.
  • 1 Pip: Give it to someone less important.
Yeah, I got it when you replied last time. Meant that it was hard to decipher without the explanation

Mostly, the confusion was because I initially assumed the plus is unknown by all, and pips are all on one side of the current char (and also thought one pip is "higher" then 2/3). I think I'll try to make diff icons, see how it works out.

Again, speed. Hitting a keybind to open the window, searching by name to display the result I want without having to change the drop down box.

These are very obviously not crucial things. I just look stuff up *A LOT* in-game, and like saving seconds here and there.

Thank you for finally letting me ditch CraftStore!

Requests:
Search filter - dropdown menu like in ISB that allows the search box to search by ingredients
Recipe/Motif/Plan box - add option to search all like in ISB

Thank you for your consideration.

One dot seems to indicate the recipe is unknown by the character with a lower priority and both 2 and 3 dots seem to show a character with higher priority, but what is the difference? There's a lot of documentation that I need to write but haven't found the time for.

First, having a single unified priority list per server is central to the design of LCK, and I have no plans to change that. In my personal case, the first three characters on my priority list are the three mains from my three accounts. And then there are some characters in my second account who take priority over some of the characters in my first account, so there's a lot of intermixing. Even for players who don't intermix as I do, a single list still has its advantages, namely that you can see which character on your other account it should go to, rather than that it should just go to someone there.

The way that ordering happens right now, with priority classes and seniority, is in part the result of the toolkit that's available to me via LibAddonsMenu. The feedback that I got during the closed beta is that it's a bit clunky and limited, and I agree that it is. The problem is that a more robust approach to setting character order would mean designing and creating a UI entirely from scratch, without using the LAM toolkit, and that's more work than what I'm willing to put into this project at the moment.

The intent that I had with the current system was for character age to do the heavy lifting (since in most cases, players give older characters priority) and then use the priority classes as a way to do spot-fixing. In my case, for example, my main isn't my oldest character, so I manually promoted that character with its own priority class. And then the mains of my other two accounts were promoted as well to the second and third place spots in the list, and then I left pretty much everything else alone, and I imagined that this sort of thing would work for most players. But for players who want to make lots of changes, then the whole priority class system--even if I were to expand it beyond 13 classes--is clearly inadequate and cumbersome. But, again, changing this would require a fundamentally different approach and an entirely new custom UI, and that's a bit too much wheel-reinvention than I am willing to do at the moment. Sorry.

Thanks for your explanations.
Hope you did not get me wrong. My comment should not challenge your basic design decisions.
I just took your tool and tried to set it up as I did with the other addon and tried to identify the walls that I was hitting.

The first wall was that I want to have different tooltips on different accounts on the same server without having to edit the setting every time I switch the accounts.
So I thought having an option to use account wide settings would be a solution for this - it is like in many other addons where you can choose to have settings for the account or use settings for a individual char.
It should only be an option - user only using one list for all accounts would ask the other way round since changeing a priority on one account would require them to log on to all other accounts to have the same list again.

The second wall was the character ordering.
Here I just thought of a simple "custom order - yes/no" setting in the general section of the settings and a simple integer number "custom ordernumber = 24" in the character settings.
- No new facy UI or complicated drop down boxes with changing contents depending on used numbers.
If the user uses a number twice the default "older < newer" is used.
And as you display the resulting order in the settings, too, the user can see if he did a mistake quite fast.

These are only ideas that you might implement, put on a list for future updates or just trash as they are not necessary for the way you use your tool.
