LibAddonMenu-2.0  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 2.0 r36
by: sirinsidiator, Seerah
LibAddonMenu is a library which offers many functions for add-on authors to simplify creating a configuration panel in the game's settings menu.

Users:

If the game cannot load some addon because it is missing LibAddonMenu-2.0 as a dependency, simply download and install it like you would any other addon. In case it shows as "out of date" in the game, simply enable the "allow out of date addons" checkbox.
IMPORTANT
In case you get an error that contains text like this:
user:/AddOns/<some other addon>/Libs/LibAddonMenu-2.0

Some other addon you have installed likely contains an old version of LibAddonMenu which is loaded before the most current one.

Make sure to search for LibAddonMenu-2.0 folders in your AddOns folder and delete all of them. Afterwards install the latest version of LibAddonMenu-2.0 separately.

Check Kyzderp's guide for more detailed instructions
Developers:

Ever since I (sirinsidiator) have taken over development of LAM-2.0 in 2015, the project is available on github and open for contributions by other authors.

With the ongoing effort to get rid of LibStub in favour of the library management capabilities provided by the game itself since Summerset was released, it is no longer recommended to embed LAM, or use LibStub to access it. Instead it should simply be specified as a dependency and accessed via the new LibAddonMenu2 global variable. Instead of providing it as part of another add-on, users should install and update it separately.

Quickstart:
Simply add LAM2 as a dependency in your addon manifest:
Code:
## DependsOn: LibAddonMenu-2.0
Optionally you can require a specific minimum version of LAM in case you rely on some features that are not available in earlier versions.
Code:
## DependsOn: LibAddonMenu-2.0>=30
In your code you can simply access the library via the global variable "LibAddonMenu2" and start creating your settings panel and controls:

Lua Code:
  1. local LAM = LibAddonMenu2
  2. local saveData = {} -- TODO this should be a reference to your actual saved variables table
  3. local panelName = "MyAddOnSettingsPanel" -- TODO the name will be used to create a global variable, pick something unique or you may overwrite an existing variable!
  4.
  5. local panelData = {
  6.     type = "panel",
  7.     name = "MyAddOn Settings",
  8.     author = "me",
  9. }
  10. local panel = LAM:RegisterAddonPanel(panelName, panelData)
  11. local optionsData = {
  12.     {
  13.         type = "checkbox",
  14.         name = "My First Checkbox",
  15.         getFunc = function() return saveData.myValue end,
  16.         setFunc = function(value) saveData.myValue = value end
  17.     }
  18. }
  19. LAM:RegisterOptionControls(panelName, optionsData)

For more examples and information you can take a look at exampleoptions.lua, AwesomeGuildStore/Settings.lua, the LAM wiki or the source code. Each control has a full list of available properties in the comment at the start of the lua file.

Features:
  • Controls - LAM offers different control types to build elaborate settings menus
  • Reset to Default - LAM can restore the settings to their default state with one key press
  • Additional AddOn Info - Add a version label and URLs for website, donations, translations or feedback
  • AddOn Search - Can't find the settings for your AddOn between the other hundred entries? No problem! Simply use the text search to quickly find what you are looking for
  • Slash Commands - Provides a shortcut to open your settings menu from chat
  • Tooltips - In case you need more space to explain what a control does, simply use a tooltip
  • Warnings - If your setting causes some unexpected behaviour, you can simply slap a warning on them
  • Dangerous Buttons - when flagged as such, a button will have red text and ask for confirmation before it runs any action
  • Required UI Reload - For cases where settings have to reload the UI or should be stored to disk right away, LAM offers a user friendly way to ask for a UI reload.
  • Support for all 5 official languages and 6 custom localisation projects

Thanks for your newest version of LibAddonMenu! Probably the best Lib on here

Did you make a change to the PlaySound on checkbox-toggling? All my checkboxes play this sound at once when refreshing/loading the Settings window. Since I'm using about 25 Checkboxes in my settings this is a pretty loud Sound Can't remember t was there in a earlier version.

Thanks for clarifying that ivanwfr. Now with that said, I wonder if there is a way to inherit the color picker and add separate values? Does Lua allow that? Like in Delphi I can inherit and override certain parts of functions and procedures.
Seerah has to answer the question but from a technical point of view: As far a I've grasped Lua concepts, it's a real neat platform to work with in that department. Metatables can reshape any bit of external code -- unless it has been specially shielded to prevent it. Still, what an add-on can override from a parenting module has to be accessible in the first place. Any method that has been made local in the parent code is out of scope.

From a more technical point of view:

It could be that many add-on functions are accessible when they should not... A flaw that could help here: It is a frequent and somewhat wrong habit in some add-ons code I've seen to organize the access-scope of should-be-internal resources (variables and methods as well), by simply confining them under their enclosing module name.

For example in LibAddonMenu-1.0.lua: the CreateControlPanel function is accesible under the "lam" parent object because is has been defined that way. So, if you have access the the lam table, you can use this function, and any entries of the lam table declared with the lam.XXX or lam:XXX syntax.

But Seerah did not make the mistake of naming internal resources that way, for example, the lastAddedControl reference is local to LibAddonMenu-1.0.lua so that external code can't tamper with its values and mess up with settings menu controls sequencing.

So, Lua features are not a problem, if the inheritance chain of information is in place anything is possible. On the contrary, Lua allows much more than any other language i've seen with its metables keys and values that let you re-implement the way you write and read object values and invoke their methods.

This has nothing to do with LAM, this is just how ESO's color picker works.

The saturation slider on the right sets the limits on the r, g, b values so as to stay within that saturation level. (Because the closer your r, g, b values get to 255, the closer your color gets to white.)

Color model - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_model

Well, I think I can shed some light on this by stating that what is described here is just another way to illustrate the features of this tool:

- That too is the idea, the constraint being a set amount of light (Value) to be distributed over red, green and blue (Hue * Saturations). (H S V, with a set Value)

- This is the whole open spectrum scenario, which is open to any user settings as long as the Lightness cursor is set to the upper limit. And you don't need to close the color picker to get the circle able to move.

Photoshop's color tool is a good example for a correct separation of these models in order to avoid the inevitable confusion of non-cooperative tools like here where they coexist in a one-way only interaction... which btw reminds me of something.

I know you are busy with 2.0 so is it something you might want to address in the current version? If so what do you need from me to see it. I don't want to make a video of it happening and have it be insulting and have you thinking, "I knew what you meant Shar" and be offensive. You are far more knowledgeable then me. However, I can show you if needed.
Well, to be honest, I'm having a hard time picturing your issue. Do you experience the same thing with color pickers from other addons? Try my ZAM Stats ones. Also, try with other addons disabled.

Unless I put the circle in the center, then close the color pick window, reopen it, change the values to 255, only after that can I really move it around to whatever I want. Can you have the range always be 0 to 255 and the default color is separate?

I already told you that it's being rewritten from the ground up. I'm not using the options window templates and all the hacks that go with them. And I said that everything you want will be much easier in 2.0. /smh

/edit: I've always said that LAM isn't for everyone - that if you wanted to do something different or specialized with your options, then to not use LAM. (I believe you can find this said a couple of times on the forums, even.)
Ok, your answer lets me focus on a somehow more contributing argumentation: I'm still convinced that LibAddonMenu is quite acceptable as a solution for nearly all the settings requirements I had to deal with. I saw the features I was missing within the use-case of a particular add-on as an opportunity to extend the application domain of the library.

I'm also convinced that the precedence and the quality of what you have accomplished will both keep this subject under your responsibility for a while. It would be vain to challenge that for some futile reason.

But, and I'm pretty sure you know what I mean, this can't be accomplished with one or two shots at some vague glimpse of a solution. Reading that I had to wait for next release for an answer to my questions was unexpected in that frame of mind. I know too well what it means and I acted accordingly.

More to the point, hacks there are! ... and all the side effect we get by using them. I can appreciate what it means to start from scratch the development of something that already works as it is, to the satisfaction of the majority. But I also know!, that the majority do not bother developing a Lua library for ESO. The reward you will get from the hard work will be of a kind that few people will value.

Stating limits to the applicability of this library is a wise safeguard against distraction from the true purpose of the project. Still, keeping an open mind for subtle complementary function could prove a fruitful challenge. It often is how some well known accomplishments turned out how they did.

Wow... so polite.

I'm glad you got something working for you. I've been spending my time totally rewriting the library from the ground up. I'm sorry if I'm not interested in spending that time instead on finding a solution for you and your fringe-case scenario in something that will be obsolete soon.
If you think that working both ways for a menu is something marginal, then I understand how my request was simply on the wrong side, sorry for the disturbance.
  • Either this will also be true for the next release (my presets fringe-case scenario considered marginal, thanks) and nothing will change about the one-way handling
  • Or you are going to change something about the setFunc() calls and did not care to talk about it when I asked.
That's not impoliteness, that's stating some facts.

Well, I found the solution, and not thanks to you as it looks like I'm the only one interested

Now I can use a workaround with a slightly modified version of LibAddonMenu. Dropdown controls behave as they should when the selected choice is changed internally, with some assistance.

The remaining nuisance is a rogue call to setFunc() with the previous value that I need to mask for a short period of time. A timer has to drop the shield with a small delay to allow further user selection from the menu.

Code:
 --[[-- STUCK-ON-LAST-CHANGE
    local selectedName
    ZO_PreHookHandler(dropmenu.m_selectedItemText, "OnTextChanged", function(self)
        if dropmenu.m_selectedItemData then
            selectedName = dropmenu.m_selectedItemData.name
            setText(self, selectedName)
            setFunc(selectedName)
        end
    end)

 --]]
---[[-- SYNCHRONIZED-WITH-ADDON
    ZO_PreHookHandler(dropmenu.m_selectedItemText, "OnTextChanged", function(self)
        if dropmenu.m_selectedItemData then
            setFunc( dropmenu.m_selectedItemData.name ) -- Send user selection (to addon)
            dropmenu:SetSelectedItem( getFunc() ) -- To update display (from addon)
        end
    end)
---]]

setFunc() is only called in the pre-hook for "OnTextChanged". So, it looks like setFunc() could be getting called twice due to
- the "OnShow" calling :SetSelectedItem() which changes the text
- the setText function (in the pre-hook) now also calling :SetSelectedItem()

If your addon works best with a reload when changing presets, then have a warning icon next to your dropdown with a tooltip that changing the preset will result in a reload UI.

Things will be much better in LAM 2.0.
Ok, thanks. I will keep looking for some workaround of my own.
Calling /reloadui is precisely the part I worked so hard to avoid. How could I let it go now that everything except the menu works fine? o.O Calling /reloaui only to synchronize menu controls is a killer when I could manage to make preset swap instant.
