 Pin Marker Update Frequency

So do the pins only save/update when you zone ?
I ask this as I was in Bal Foyen to mark all the resource nodes recently and had a fair bit tagged, but then the game did a CTD.
When I logged back in none of the markers were saved.
Please advise, thanks.
