It does sound like I am misunderstanding. Just as you say, I am trying to research things on one specific character. So I'm not clear why it would "prefer" the bank to that character's inventory. When you say that this is done so all characters can research the item, that seems (to me) to conflict with the idea of having one...

My goal is to solve the situation of learning my bank is full because I have stuffed nine light armor hats with the sturdy trait in my bank, when I only need one to research.
