This would be great. But is there a way to do it so it only deletes items with a gold value of 0 (zero)? Perhaps something to look into for a future feature. ;)
Yes, it can be done quite easily. Just going from value alone is dangerous however. :)

When I open the transfer window I have like 36 characters, every one that I ever had since launch. How does it know all those characters and how do I prune the list?
