If you are new to lua I suggest you to read
Programming in Lua. This is an old edition but the fundamental concepts are still valid. There is a chapter about object-oriented programming (16). I think it's better to read the book than to sit on broken code and wonder why it isn't working the way you expect it to work (because you know other launguages and think it should work the same way).
