GIT control apnel already looks different:
HarvestRoute is not a separate entry with "add git repo" checkbox any more.
There was no merge option after chosing "make zip", so I guess you've done the merge?
Also, updating the addon worked flawlessly.

I'll have a look into the API integration for other repository services. Just felt that using the "native" GIT was a good option
